Brighton Sealife Centre
Investigated 18th November 2006
Overview The board pictured above, which stands in the Victorian Arcade of this venue, clearly states
that paranormal activity has been reported by staff members for many years. On the 18th November 2006, CaSPIR UK along with
our network partners from 'The Listeners' and 'TCPI' had the opportunity to try and solve the question of paranormal activity
once and for all. Location History Brighton Sealife Centre began its life as a purpose built aquarium. It was designed by the
same celebrated architect that designed the West Pier; Eugenius Birch. Although the pier is certainly the more famous of the
two buildings, at least this one can still be seen and admired. It is also well worth a visit during the day, especially if
you have children. When it opened in 1872 it contained not only marine exhibits but a reading room, restaurant and conservatory. It was an instant, fashionable success and within a few years was extended to include a rooftop terraced garden, roller-skating rink and music conservatory. Through the 1880’s, the aquarium introduced organ recitals, lectures, concerts and plays as well as display tanks containing sea-lions, an octopus and lobsters but failed to sustain the success of the early years. In 1901 it was purchased by the corporation. The exterior was refurbished between 1927 and 1929 altering much of Birch’s original design including the removal of the clock tower which can be seen in the photograph pictured above. In the years following the redevelopment, the aquarium played host to a number of attractions including a nightclub, a cinema and a motor museum before returning to it’s original purpose - the exhibition of marine creatures. Previous Activity As previously noted, there have been reports of paranormal activity within the building for
decades. Nothing specific has been detailed with regards to these reports, however during our last we witnessed the following…
