The Red Lion - Avebury Investigated 16th September 2006 ![]() High Street, Avebury, Wiltshire, SN8 1RF www.redlion-avebury.com A Brief History
The Red Lion in Avebury is unique in as far as it's the only public house in the world (that we're aware of) that stands in the centre of a Neolithic stone circle. The circle dates back to 2000 BCE while the pub is a mere infant beginning its life as a house in the 1600's. It was a coaching inn before being converted to a pub and restaurant in 1802 and was extended at this time to enclose the old village well. The well itself (circa 1600 CE) is 86ft deep (26.23m) and is believed to be the last resting place of at least one unfortunate villager. Legend tells of Florrie, a 17th century landlady who was murdered and pushed down the well by her husband, who returning from the civil war found her being unfaithful. CaSPIR UK had an excellent evening investigating this classic venue and we would like to thank Richard, Tracey and all the staff at the Red Lion for their superb hospitality. Thanks also to our special guests for the night; Paul Hanrahan, Colin (TCPI), Mark Emery & Joanne Williams ('The Listeners') and Alan ('Beyond the Senses'). Previous Reported Activity
The legend of Florrie is world renowned, as is the tale that she still haunts the Red Lion pub. Several customers and employees have reported seeing Florrie, dressed in black and walking around the pub in search of a bearded man. Customers have even reported seeing Florrie in the ladies toilets and a previous pub landlady said the ghost of Florrie was known to through salt and pepper over tables and chairs.
