RMP Museum / Roussillon Barracks - Chichester

Investigated 29th July 2006

Overview
Roussillon Barracks have stood on the outskirts of Chichester since 1795, the oldest part still remaining is the 'Keep' and 'Chapel'. The former of which now hosts the RMP Museum which is dedicated to the history of the 'Royal Military Police', the later was originally built as a school house to provide the children of the regiment with an education.

For 50 years, the Barracks served as home to the local militia (forerunner of TA) and by 1873 it had become the Brigade Depot for the Royal Sussex Regiment who laid the Green as the main parade ground.

The Royal Military Police did not commandeer the barracks until 1964.

For years the staff and residents of these barracks have been troubled by unexplainable phenomena and similarly for years paranormal investigation teams have attempted to get to the bottom of the problem; the 29th July 2006 was CaSPIR's turn to try.

Previous Reported Activity
  • Apparitions reported in the Sergeants mess
  • Strange smells and feelings of discomfort and unease in the Garden
  • Areas where security and staff refuse to enter due to feelings of dread and fear
  • Unexplained shadows and sounds reported on 1st floor of the Old Keep
Purpose of our Investigation
The purpose of this investigation was to attempt to find a natural explanation for all of the above reports.
