Arundel Town Hall and Jail

Overview
Not much is known about the jail in Arundel as far as records are concerned. All custodial records have long been destroyed; it is suggested that this happened at the time of the amalgamation of the town's constabulary with other local police forces.

What we do know however, is that the jail is part of the town hall, of which we know the following...

Arundel town hall was built in Maltravers Street by the Duke of Norfolk in 1834-5 to the design of Robert Abraham, the use of the 'sacristy' being given up by the town council as a quid pro quo in 1848. The building has a flint and sandstone façade with flanking towers in Norman style. A large upstairs room was used in 1847 for balls, concerts, and similar events.

The basement had three cells, which from 1844 were used by the county police force; it also housed the town fire engines. The town hall accommodated meetings of the town council and magistrates' courts in 1991." - From: 'Arundel', A History of the County of Sussex: Volume 5 Part 1: Arundel Rape: south-western part, including Arundel (1997), pp. 10-101. Since those times, the layout has been modified somewhat to include 7 cells instead of 3, one of which was used for solitary confinement.

The jail now plays host to 'The Arundel Ghost Experience', which is hosted ably by Kevin Williams. This delightful display of storytelling and mechanics is spine chilling and most certainly, not for the faint-hearted.

When CaSPIR UK paid a social visit to this location earlier this year, we noticed that not everything that was moving was the result of Kevin's special effects, which prompted us to enquire as to the possibility of investigating the premises once all Kevin's toys are packed away.

Previous Reported Activity
  • Batteries discharge with amazing speed.
  • Dragging sounds have been heard in the central area.
  • Cutlery and crockery have been heard moving in the kitchen; un-aided.
  • A smell of rotting flesh has been reported within the Solitary Cell.
Purpose of our Investigation
The purpose of this investigation was to attempt to find a natural explanation for all of the above reports.
