Geiger Muller Counters

Now I know what you are thinking, why would anyone want to use one of these on a paranormal investigation. That's exactly the reaction we had when we got into a discussion with some of our American cousins who regularly use one.

We decided to give it a go, but not being particularly convinced bought the (cheapish) second-hand unit shown below

The reason why we were prepared to give this a go is that low level (and I do mean Low) Alpha, Beta and Gama radiation is just another form of energy, albeit a bit more anti-human.

There are places in Britain where fairly high levels of radon gas, an Alpha emitter, can be found in parts of Cornwall, Wales and Scotland.

Some natural rock formations emit Alpha radiation as a natural part of their decay process, Granite is probably the best known example. So if you are going to do an investigation where there is rock of this kind present it may be worth knowing if the energy emission is high or low

At a recent investigation this piece of kit came into its own and managed to show a very sudden high reading, well above background. This was accompanied by other "paranormal?" like effects recorded by other equipment and indications from a sensitive that something (we will keep the what and where to ourselves for the moment) had happened.

Now I am a complete sceptic as was a colleague who was present, but we were both pretty impressed with the behaviour of the radiation monitor. Still not convinced, but we will certainly be adding this to our regular equipment cargo going forward.
